Naturopathic medicine is a distinct profession of primary health care, emphasizing prevention, treatment and the promotion of optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and modalities which encourage the self-healing process, the vis medicatrix naturae.
The Vis, which may also be understood as chi or prana, is our bodies', our communities', and nature's vital force and way of bringing itself into balance and wellness. For me, your symptoms or illness is one of the ways that the Vis communicates that you are out of balance, and creates an opportunity for you to learn from your body, be well, and heal. Inciting healing, balance, and wellness are fundamental to the therapeutic relationship in naturopathic medicine. We do this, not just by addressing your physical health, but your mental, emotional, and spiritual health, and begin to uncover the underlying cause of your symptoms or illness. We work together to remove the obstacles to your healing process with compassion, humor, education, and a number of supportive therapies.
Therapeutic modalities that I utilize include botanical medicine, homeopathy, therapeutic nutrition and food-as-medicine, supplementation, therapeutic exercise, hydrotherapy, osseous manipulation, craniosacral therapy, and counseling.
My areas of emphasis are women's health, adolescent health, and pediatrics, and the multitude of conditions, challenges, and transitions that accompany infants, older kids, teens, and women in their lives. Naturopathic medicine is also incredibly powerful in treating a variety of conditions, including digestive issues, allergies, autoimmune disease, endocrine disorders, environmental toxicity, cardiovascular or neurological disorders.
As a naturopathic physician in Washington State, I am able to act as your family's primary care physician or provide adjunct care alongside your specialist or PCP. I offer annual physicals, sports physicals, well-woman care, well-child visits, laboratory testing, vaccinations, therapeutic injections, minor office procedures, and referrals to specialists as any other family physician, in addition to prescriptive rights for conventional therapies.
Insurance coverage is available for naturopathic family care through most major health plans that serve Washington State. If you are uninsured or naturopathic care is not covered under your plan, a sliding scale is available.
If you have questions about naturopathic medicine and its role in your health, my practice, or whether my services are covered under your health plan, please contact Dr. Sunita for more information.
